Claude McKay

1889 – 1948

Poet and novelist of the Harlem Renaissance

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Jamaica Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

A poet from Clarendon who became one of the founding voices of the Harlem Renaissance.

McKay published two volumes of dialect poetry in Jamaica before moving to the United States in 1912. His sonnet 'If We Must Die' (1919), written after a summer of racist violence, became an anthem of resistance, and his novel Home to Harlem (1928) was a bestseller.
